Title: It's Because You Are Special

A/N: Ok, so this is for the people who wished that Clark wasn't such an idiot at the end of the episode. I guess you can say that I am still firmly on the optimist's bench but I wish we had gotten more than angst with this scene. Lois had made up her mind in Star City; she had decided to write off what had happened before, during, and after Chloe’s wedding as a complete and total lapse in judgment. It was one thing to have a sort of attraction to Clark, but something entirely different if she admitted to having any sort of feelings for him. It was best to just push that all aside and go on with her life as it was. She would stick to work and make damn sure that the world knew the name Lois Lane and that it was synonymous with investigative journalist. It was time to focus on that Pulitzer.
She had asked him to meet her for a cup of coffee after work.
It wasn’t really a big deal. It shouldn’t be a big deal, but still she sat waiting for him. Waiting for a man she had decided to leave behind; waiting for him to show up, or to not show up at all. Lois had tried to make sure it sounded like it didn’t matter whether he came or didn’t come.
But it did matter.
It mattered more to Lois than she would care to admit to anyone, let alone herself.
Clark sure knew how to screw a girl up without even trying.
She hadn’t been waiting long. The waitress had just dropped off her cup of coffee. With steam rising from the cup, hot meeting the cold night air, Lois wrapped her hands around the mug to warm them. Taking a sip, she barely noticed the liquid burning her tongue as she surreptitiously glanced around.
Clark didn’t have to come, she reminded herself. She had made that clear enough.
Okay. See you there. Or not. Or whatever. I’m going to work.
Lois hadn’t even planned on asking him, she hadn’t planned on even talking to him. She sort of got the picture after only getting those three ten second voice mails from him.
Spending a month in Star City, she’d had nothing to do but think. There had been moments between them, moments that she couldn’t possibly have over analyzed; moments that made it clear, or should have, that something was happening between them. Not wanting to put herself out there, not wanting to be the one left behind, Lois had decided to push her feelings aside. He couldn’t hurt her if she didn’t let him get close again.
But then she had seen him waiting for her.
He had been standing at the airport entrance; standing there waiting for her under an umbrella in the pouring rain, and when he smiled at her in greeting, as if he were so happy to see her, Lois cursed her already floundering heart.
He had made it to her side in seconds, trading her luggage for his umbrella. She might have smiled in thanks. They had stood there for a moment, neither knowing what to say. The silence wasn’t so uncomfortable standing in front of him, with the rain pounding out a sweet rhythm. As she looked him over, soaked now but not caring, she noticed the almost tender look he gave her. It was gone instantly and she felt robbed of something precious. For that one moment she felt as though he knew something she didn’t and ached for whatever it was he saw in her.
During the almost completely silent drive from the airport to The Daily Planet, Lois decided that she just didn’t understand him one bit. He was generally very easy for her to read.
She was determined that things did not turn awkward between them. Above all else she valued his friendship. It didn’t matter anymore if she believed that they could be so much more together.
She knew deep down that they would be. Growing up as she did, Lois Lane had learned to trust her gut early on. Right now it was telling her not to give up on him. It was telling her that if she just waited a little longer it would be worth it. Things would be different because he was.
She just didn’t know if she could wait any longer.
Taking a cautious sip from her coffee this time, Lois glanced down at her phone.
He hadn’t called. He hadn’t showed.
She hated the fact that he could turn her into someone so vulnerable, into someone she didn’t recognize.
Maybe waiting wasn’t such a good idea.
****************************************************************
Clark had been standing across the street for a couple of minutes now. He had watched as she sat down at the coffee place, had watched her order, and then he had watched her wait.
Wait for him.
He hadn’t been sure whether or not he should meet her. He wasn’t sure if he was ready for the conversation they might or might not have. He wasn’t ready to analyze the feelings churning inside of him. Telling her his secret had opened his eyes to a great many of things.
Lois hadn’t been angry with him for not telling her sooner. She had understood his need for secrecy. She was more upset that she hadn’t figured it out herself and even though he knew she had tried to hide the hurt, he knew she had been that Chloe and Lana had known for years. If he could change one thing about that conversation, it would have been to take the time to make her understand that she was the only one he had told willingly. She had been the only one he had decided should know.
She hadn’t even blinked when he told her he was from another planet, and she had been intrigued by his powers. He hadn’t mistaken the sparkle in her eyes as he had listed them all. He knew Lois Lane thought what he could do was cool. All of his life he had tried to fit in, he had tried to be normal. In that one moment, standing in front of her in that dusty storage room, he had felt at safe. She believed in him.
Lois Lane was amazing, but deep down he had always recognized that.
He had recognized that she accepted him no matter what, even before he had told her everything about him. Lois even understood his need to protect her by keeping his secret from her when he reversed time. She trusted him to do what he thought was right.
When he went back in time, his first thought, after taking care of Linda Lake, had been to be on time to pick Lois up from the airport. He hadn’t wanted to see that disappointment and pain in her eyes again. Clark wanted her to know that she was on the top of his priority list. He wanted her to know that she mattered to him, and not just because they were friends. After this latest fiasco, he could admit to himself that they could be so much more than friends if only he could get past his fear. But out of everything, he wanted Lois to know that she was special.
No, she would not be left alone waiting for him in the rain.
“Why should I think I’m special?”
“You are special,” Clark whispered aloud at the memory. He remembered how he had tried to explain his motive for not telling her his secret. He had tried to explain that it was because she was special that he was unwilling to tell her. She mattered to him. She mattered more than he had realized. He had believed that by keeping his secret from her, he was protecting her.
But maybe that wasn’t the case. Maybe one day he’d find a way to keep her safe. He wanted to tell her, he wanted her to know him completely and that surprised him. Never before had he wanted to let anyone in. Clark knew now for a fact that Lois would accept him regardless of his heritage and powers. Actually, she treated him exactly the same.
Lois Lane was one of a kind. Clark wanted her to realize she was special, and for that reason alone he started forward, walking over to her solitary table.

“Sorry I’m late.”
Lois looked up at him quickly, and Clark hated the surprise he saw in her eyes. He hated himself even more for ever thinking of not showing.
“No problem,” she said. I didn’t think you’d come, her mind whispered. She bit her lip as she considered him, and wondered what he was thinking. He was dressed differently, and he looked as nervous as she had felt moments ago. Now, that he was here though, her heart was lighter.
Clark took the seat across from her, but said nothing, not knowing where to start. There were so many things he wanted to say but couldn’t. There were so many things he couldn’t say but wanted to. He wanted to tell her that she looked beautiful. He wanted to talk about what had been happening between them. He couldn’t tell her about his secret, but wanted to more than anything. He wanted to see that acceptance and understanding in her eyes. He wanted to pick her up and run with her anywhere she wanted to go.
He didn’t know what to say, but he wanted to be sitting across from her.
They sat there, waited for the waitress to stop by and drop off another coffee, and then smiled sheepishly.
“I’m glad I came,” he admitted seriously. It was only fair to tell her that.
“I’m glad you came,” she admitted at the same time, not sure why she did so.
Clark smiled as Lois looked heavenward with a roll of her eyes. It was easy between them. It had always been easy. Whether they were fighting or laughing things had always easy. They were both worried what would happen if things changed.
“Things are complicated right now,” Clark began, knowing that they had to have some sort of discussion, but not ready for anything complicated. “I don’t know what I’m ready for,” he said softly.
Lois studied his face for a moment, slightly astonished that he would admit even that to her and then nodded in understanding. “How about coffee?” She suggested seriously and silently laughed as he looked to her face quickly, obviously hopeful and intrigued.
“Coffee?”
“Yeah. We sit, we drink, and we talk. Maybe even sometimes we can interchange the coffee with a beer,” Lois explained with a teasing smile.
“I think I can handle that,” Clark deadpanned and narrowed his eyes slightly.
“Oh you do, do you?” She bit her lip again as she leaned across the table.
“Bring it Lane.” He leaned forward as well, dropping his chin onto his fist. He watched her eyes, amused at the challenge in them and smiled.
